Every new shopping agent could become another integration a merchant has to build. Mastercard is trying to turn that many-to-many problem into one connection. Agent Connect is designed as a shared integration point across participating merchants, agents, commerce services and payment providers.1
Mastercard says Agent Connect will provide a single integration point linking participating merchants, AI agents, commerce services and payment providers. Agents can discover product data, confirm cart details and complete consumer-authorized transactions using secure credentials from any network.1

| Stage | What the agent needs |
|---|---|
| Discover | Merchant-provided product details and availability |
| Build the cart | Final pricing, taxes, shipping and fulfillment details |
| Pay | Consumer-authorized transaction using secure payment credentials from any network |
The product is really an interoperability bet
An outside agent needs current catalog information, accurate availability and a way to assemble a valid order. Mastercard is positioning Agent Connect between those systems so each merchant does not need a bespoke connection to every agent.
Mastercard says merchants can choose which AI experiences to connect with while retaining control over pricing, fulfillment, customer relationships and business rules. That matters because an agent can become the interface through which the shopper experiences the merchant.1
Discovery and payment are being pulled together
Mastercard’s broader commerce report frames trust, authorization and identity as prerequisites when software acts for people. Agent Connect adds the connectivity layer: the agent has to reach the merchant and payment system before those controls can matter.2
The resemblance to Shopify’s agentic storefront push is clear. Both make merchant data legible to AI while keeping the transaction attached to existing commerce infrastructure. Mastercard approaches the problem from payments and interoperability.
This is a rollout, not a universal network
The announcement names companies that plan to use or explore the merchant suite and says Agent Connect is beginning in the United States. It is not evidence that every merchant or shopping agent is connected today.1
What merchants still have to decide
- Which agents may access their products.
- Which price, inventory and fulfillment data can be exposed.
- How consumer intent is confirmed before a transaction.
- Who owns the customer relationship when the interface sits elsewhere.
The web standardized how browsers reach sites. Agentic commerce now needs connective tissue between software shoppers and the systems that actually sell things. Mastercard is betting that a payment network can help provide it.
