Meta already owns some of the places where customers ask a business a question, request a recommendation or try to make a purchase. Business Agent adds a new layer to that distribution: software that can respond, qualify, book and sell inside the same messaging apps instead of sending the business to a separate help-desk product.1

IN BRIEF

Meta says more than one million businesses use Business Agent and its apps host more than one billion active business conversation threads each day. The product can answer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify leads and close sales. Meta is now packaging greater agent capacity into paid subscriptions, turning messaging distribution into a potential software business.1, 2

Hundreds
Systems the platform can connect to1

Meta says the Business Agent Platform can connect to hundreds of systems including Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee.

Those numbers show distribution, not productivity. Meta does not disclose how many customer conversations the agents actually handle, how often people return to use them, what share of issues require a human, or how much revenue the product generates. One million enabled businesses is not the same thing as one million deeply active software customers.1

The agent sits inside the customer conversation

What Meta Business Agent can do today1
Customer needAgent roleBusiness control
Product questionAnswer business-specific questions and recommend catalog items.A team member can step in when needed.
Appointment or leadBook appointments and qualify incoming leads. The business defines the operating context and can connect existing systems.
PurchaseGuide the customer toward a sale and close transactions.Larger businesses can use enterprise controls, guardrails and measurement.
Missed conversationsSummarize chats and deliver a morning briefing. The business can use the agent alongside WhatsApp Business, Messenger, Instagram and Meta Business Suite.

The strategic advantage is not that Meta invented customer-service automation. It is that Meta can distribute it where a conversation may already be happening. A small business that gets inquiries through WhatsApp or Instagram does not need to persuade the customer to open another support channel before the agent becomes useful.1

Messaging distribution can become software distribution

Meta is also building an agent platform for larger companies, with connections to systems such as Shopify and Zendesk. That makes Business Agent more than a scripted inbox responder. The agent can sit between Meta’s messaging network and the systems a business already uses to manage products, support and operations.1

That pushes Meta toward the same broader shift covered in our agentic-commerce analysis: the conversation is becoming a place where discovery, service and transactions can happen together. Meta’s twist is that it already owns several of the messaging surfaces where those conversations start.

The free product is already turning into a paid tier

At launch, Meta said businesses could get started for free and that paid subscriptions were coming. Meta One now makes that packaging visible. Its business tiers include increasing Business Agent capacity, with plans starting at $14.99 per month and rising to $499 for the highest published tier.1, 2

That changes the economics of the relationship. Meta can still make money when a business buys ads to acquire a customer, then potentially collect a recurring software fee when that business uses Meta’s agent to answer and serve the customer afterward. The two revenue models can sit on the same network without being the same product.2

One million businesses is adoption, not proof of ROI

The metrics that would show Business Agent is becoming durable software

  • Repeat usage by businesses after the initial setup period.
  • Share of conversations resolved without a human handoff.
  • Revenue and paid conversion once subscription tiers mature.
  • Customer outcomes such as booking, lead or purchase completion rather than message volume alone.

Meta Business Agent is interesting because the company does not have to build distribution from scratch. The business conversations are already happening inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. If the agent earns a recurring fee by making those conversations more useful, Meta moves one step beyond selling attention and closer to selling the software that helps a business operate.

Scope and assumptions

The one-million-business and one-billion-daily-thread figures are company-reported and do not measure agent usage intensity or customer satisfaction.

Meta does not disclose Business Agent revenue, paid conversion, resolution rates or return on investment for businesses.

The ability to connect to hundreds of systems describes platform reach, not proof that every integration supports the same actions or quality.
